A recall was issued for a manufacturer’s baby teething tablets after it was found they contained “inconsistent amounts of belladonna alkaloids,” the Food and Drug Administration said Thursday.
Hyland’s Baby Teething Tablets and Hyland’s Baby Nighttime Teething Tablets are sold in retail stores, though the company stopped making and shipping the product in October.
They are distributed by the Standard Homeopathic Company, based in Santa Monica, California.
Derived from plants, belladonna alkaloids are typically used to treat muscle spasms in the digestive tract when combined with the drug phenobarbital, according to the Mayo Clinic.
“There is no known safe dose or toxic dose of belladonna in children because of the many factors that affect it,” the FDA said in a statement.
